Comprehensive Prenatal Care
New Britain Obstetrics offers comprehensive prenatal care for expectant mothers. We specialize in obstetrical care for both low-risk and high-risk patients.
Early and continued care for mothers-to-be is very important and we have a team of medical professionals to work with you. Our goal is for you and your baby to be healthy.
During your pregnancy, you may need or desire additional tests, including:
- First trimester chromosomal abnormality screening
An ultrasound creates an image of the developing fetus within the uterus. Ultrasound may be performed early in your pregnancy to:
- Confirm gestational age
- Establish whether a normal pregnancy is present
- Determine fetal heartbeat
- Identify cases of multiple gestations
Later in your pregnancy, ultrasounds are used to:
Look for any developmental or other problems in the fetus
Possible determine the gender of the fetus
Measure the size, growth, and position of the fetus
Check for abnormalities of the placenta, uterus, or amniotic fluid
Testing and Screening
While pregnant, you should undergo routine lab tests. Early in pregnancy, we will obtain samples from your blood, urine, and cervix. You also will be tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
As part of your total prenatal wellness experience, we refer you to a lab for the following blood tests throughout your pregnancy:
- Blood type and antigen
- Hematocrit and hemoglobin
- Hepatitis B
For your peace of mind, we also offer screening for potential birth defects and chromosomal abnormalities, including:
- Neural tube defects
- Down’s Syndrome
- Trisomy 21
- Trisomy 18
If there is are potential abnormal test results, genetic counseling and referral to a perinatologists are made for possible amniocentesis.
